"I wanna come over...."
First recorded and shared with the world by Gomez, this is a recording of Editors at the One Love Festival in Istanbul on the 3rd July 2011. The files are being made available just as they were originally in FLAC format in accordance with the taper's wishes. Thanks very much for your work, Gomez.
The alternative scene was represented very well with a pretty solid collection of bands at the top of the dance card, which saw the band sharing a stage with both Suede and future touring partners Manic Street Preachers. Not too sure about Happy Mondays being given a higher billing than Editors, however, because in 2011 they weren't really the force they were in the early 90s.
Luckily for us, the setlist has within it one of the most effective live versions of Camera done by the first lineup of the band. The way it was recorded from the crowd makes it feel like Tom is completely immersed in the thing, sending out these echoing messages from the centre. I love the way he drifts away from the rigid structure of the Back Room recording, accentuating and altering small parts of the song to give it a whole new identity, which is precisely what performing live should be in my opinion. Use the studio take as a guide but take the training wheels off when you're on stage, see where you end up.

Two Hearted Spider is a strange one here. There was either a problem with Ed's snare drum or they were just still trying different ways to play the song live, but it becomes a little bit stop/start as a result of some dropout. As a consequence it loses some of the natural rhythm and flow that it normally has. It's still a special moment in the show, mostly in retrospect, because it's a version of 2HS that never made it to completion in this form, for reasons we're all aware of. It just seems as though it never quite gets into its stride here.
We also have the full-band, electric version of No Sound But The Wind. If you're used to the Werchter-seducing take with just Mr Smith and the ivories, then this will give you a whole new angle on it. It seems like this was always a track with several personalities, with some of us liking the bare bones and others preferring all four Editors taking part. It's also been played live with different sets of lyrics, ultimately ending up with a teen vampire flick for a permanent recorded home. A weird journey. Enjoy the music ;)
