Oddity #22 - Radio 1 Jingle (we're all doomed)

This is an oddity and also quite a rarity. In 2009 and prior to the release of Papillon, the band recorded a jingle for DJ Nick Grimshaw as part of his Radio 1 show. It aired right at the very beginning of the ITLAOTE campaign, when Editors were much more machine-driven and electronic than they had been previously, and so it doesn't sound too dissimilar to the material on E3. I don't know the actual official title of the track, or the exact timeline of its recording, but its sound and tone would seem to indicate that it came out of the ITLAOTE sessions. However, I take absolutely nothing for granted because they were also trying to shape Formaldehyde into a finished track at this stage, 4 years prior to it actually getting released, and that was far from electronic.

If you've ever played the game Doom, then this is the kind of thing you'd probably hear in the background as you wandered around with your chainsaw, removing limbs and generally making a nuisance of yourself to everyone you encountered. It also redefines the notion of a jingle being all about a catchy tune to make you buy or identify with a brand/product. Something that makes you want to whistle along as it slowly burrows (or even Smith and Burrows) into your defenseless brain box. I'm thinking of things like "I feel like chicken tonight" or the Shake and Vac ad (ask your great-grandparents). Here, it sounds like your being told "Something really, really heavy is about to go down".

Imagine if Chariots of Fire had been a movie about goths running in the Olympics (something that would never happen, obviously, because of the abundance of horrible daylight and spandex shorts required). This would have been the opening theme. Ominous. Enjoy the music, but look out behind you... ;)
