We had to wait for 200 days but we finally got the ARTE film of Editors appearing at Schwuz in Berlin, on the 25th July 2016. The reason for the delay remains unclear, but this has given the gig a slightly mysterious aura as a result. We've been able to listen to it since the day after it happened thanks to Sven, but there was always that question as to what we were missing out on seeing as well as hearing. So much of what the band are doing these days relies upon the presentation of the songs, and not just in the proficiency of how they're played. Mr Smith seems to have really embraced the position of front-man and performer, possibly reluctantly, but he's been able to adopt the role with ease (see ERM=BD).
The show begins with No Harm, which is a bit of misdirection on their part because the set that follows is nothing like the opener. It's all atmosphere and mood setting, and then things move at a much faster pace with each track afterwards. Because of the strict stage time limitations, only an hour, they had to come up with the equivalent of a festival setlist. I would also offer that a club show like this is their natural environment; small stage and the crowd right up the front. The irony being that when they started out way back in the day, when even rainbows were black and white, around 11 songs is all they would have been allowed before being booted offstage.
When this video finally emerged from the dark vaults of ARTE, it gave us another chance to check out The Pulse, which was the track to hear throughout the In Dream tour campaign due to its elusive status as an unreleased Editors number. There's every likelihood that the song will be a different animal when it's pushed through the studio filters on its way to being officially released. Oh, and note the little chuckle that Tom allows himself for whatever reason towards the end just after "Little heart, little soul, little space, little time".
The Pulse's lofty status has since been surpassed by Dream Dark as Your Heaven, which is out there and is a finished studio release, it's just completely unavailable to listen to other than by the two lucky souls who have their copy. Which sucks. But I'm optimistic, people. Always hopeful.
My only gripe about this concert, and it's a minor one, is that I feel like it would have been an excellent night to do the long overdue duet with La Goswell. When Ocean of Night enters that section where the hand claps come in, I can hear her singing. She's not there, but she's such a part of the studio take that it feels weird not hearing her voice. In a perfect world, La Goswell duets live on The Law or Ocean of Night in the future, possibly whilst carrying an mp3 player with Dream Dark as Your Heaven on it, and she's more than willing to lend us her headphones if we ask politely and with respect. I can dream.
Below you'll find some mp3s ripped from the video so you get that professionally mixed quality as a counterpoint to Sven's excellent bootleg. Thanks again to you, sir. There's also all the evidence of the journey leading up to the official release of the concert, preview videos etc, by way of marking the time we've all enjoyed passing while we've been waiting. Ho ho. Enjoy the music ;)

Bonus Materials - Sven's Audience Recording
You know that luck is on your side when a previous contributor to the Archive is one of the very fortunate 300 people in the audience for last night's show in Berlin. Sven, take a bow because this is incredible. We had to wait 200 days for the video but this recording was available the day after the show. Outstanding job, sir, and thanks for sharing it ;)
