The astonishing bad fortune that has been a passenger on the In Dream tour campaign continues to wreak its own miserable brand of havoc and disappointment. The American tour is off, and that's a worrying thing if you've been following this story since it first began. It was back in September last year that it transpired that something was up with Mr Smith, a health concern that derailed an acoustic performance with QMusic on Belgian radio. 4 months later, five of the European dates were cancelled because Tom was still not well enough to participate. If you're an American fan of the band, then the news that broke yesterday that the entirety of the impending US tour is off (see photo above) must be absolutely crushing. The band don't get over to the States as often as I'm sure they'd like, and so to hear that these shows that have been in the works for some time now aren't happening, must be the worst possible result for you all.
But to put this into some kind of perspective, the health problems that Mr Smith is going through will have lasted for over 6 months if he actually returns to live duty in April. That's about the same recovery time for someone who's undergone a major operation, such as hip or knee surgery. For an infection to put him out of action for that long obviously means that he's not looking at a simple cold or flu; something that could be shaken off by spending a few days under a duvet eating soup and moaning about how dreadful you're feeling (my own personal favourite coping strategy).
I feel terrible for the American fans who are going to miss out this time around, I really do. There's nothing worse that getting that close to the prize and then having it pulled away at the last minute. But the disappointment is tempered by a lingering worry over Tom's well-being that has yet to leave. I hope he's OK, and that you all get your chance to see them perform sometime down the line. Feel better, Tom.
brought to you with lots and lots of lemming-love :) x
