Rock in Roma 21st july 2014 (audio)

Y.O.U.

This was a show that, at that time, saw the return of a few familiar songs and a personnel swap as Nic Willes stepped in for Elliott, who was away making music as Y.O.U. (Your Own Universe). This confirms the obviously very relaxed and casual terms of employment that Editors seems to operate under, even to this day. People join the band, but they can take a temporary leave of absence and return down the line without missing a step. No restrictions and no exclusivity, just creative freedom.

As with every campaign, some tunes make it onto the running order and some are left idling. At Rock in Roma, The Weight returned to the setlist in solo-acoustic form, as well as Bricks and Mortar and Two Hearted Spider. Also, and for all its status as a b-side from the ITLAOTE days, Life as a Ghost seemed to have becoming a bit of a favourite among crowds on this touring cycle. There's a cracking rendition of Nothing here too.

The second version of Editors is still in its formative stages here, despite technically having been a fully operational unit for almost two years. It shows when you look at which eras of the band's history are covered during the performance. There are 12 songs that were written before Justin and Elliott arrived, 13 if you include the rearranged take of Two Hearted Spider, with only 7 from The Weight of Your Love. They were, of course, still a year away from releasing In Dream so it was more of a product of necessity than anything else. This would balance out a little more the further they got into playing live as a 5-piece.

The whole thing ends with the long version of Papillon, a song which Elliott promised he could make even better when he joined the band. Even though he's not on the stage, you can still appreciate just how right he was. All in all this is a good quality audience recording and a solid show, with a crowd who seem to be totally in the mood for a singalong. They know all the words to even the more obscure tracks (The Weight, for example).  I would expect nothing less from Italian Editors fans. They're built differently. Enjoy the music ;)
