A trip back to January 2008 next, and a chance to hear Editors' radio session on 89.3 The Current. They were actually guests on the show 2 years prior to this, in April of 2006, and that session is also available here at the Archive by following this link.
All 4 Editors were in attendance, with Ed providing minimal percussion and Russell abandoning the bass temporarily to be on the keys once more. This is never, ever a bad thing. Not to denigrate his bass playing, not at all, but as I've said before I love what he brings to songs when he plays the piano. This session is no exception, particularly on Bones which is a song I've championed endlessly here on the blog. This is also a chance to re-experience the absolute beauty of Chris paying his Rickenbacker. I still miss Chris playing guitar. I know that I've said it before a lot, but it's usually after re-listening to these old sessions that realise just how much I mean it.
On a related note, the interviews reveal an interesting point, that of Chris and Tom trying to out-melody each other during the songwriting process. It's appropriate, because the melodies are certainly to the fore throughout this show. I suppose that it's in performances like this where you really get a chance to hear if a song has any substance at all, or if what attracted you to it in the first place was simply the noise and the volume it was played at.
The version of this show that's available on youtube only has 2 tracks, Smokers and Bones, while the interviews and AEHAS are all missing. However, the full session is intact here at the Archive in audio form with everything reinstated and complete, including the original mp3 stream that I ripped during the broadcast.
