Squirm in awkwardness or thrill to the sight of a sombre looking Loz Guest nodding his head earnestly while Tom does his acoustic thing, in this aptly named "Cupboard Session" for Kerrang Radio on September 5th 2013. This must have been an extremely uncomfortable thing to have to do, probably for both parties. At least in a conventional gig setting there's some breathing room between performer and audience. Not here. I imagine there's a point during each of the songs where Mr Smith was able lose himself in the music, only to be snapped back into reality when he finished to find himself in a confined space with an audience of one. Conversely, Loz has to walk the line between "attentive listener" and "creepily staring at the Editor" for the whole thing. Then there's the question of what do you do when Tom finishes playing? One person clapping can come off as a little bit weird, but what's the alternative? Maybe a rowdy "Yes sir, that's the stuff!" followed by some high fives, or a couple of finger-pistols and a knowing wink? It's probably also the one time you might regret having opted for the garlic bread with your meal at lunch, as the room fills with the second-hand aroma leaking out of your every pore.
That either man was able to leave this encounter with their sanity and dignity intact is a Minor Victory (do you see what I did there?).
