Did you catch the Berlin webcast? Well if you didn't......
This was the official launch show for Editors' The Weight of Your Love album in June 2013, although there was another one just over a week later at Village Underground in London for UK fans. Included here for your viewing and listening enjoyment is a video of the gig, the promotional clip for the show, separate mp3 files, an audience recording from Sven (thank you again, sir) and a single mp3 digital radio rip of the entire set from new friend to the Archive, Pawel. I would point out that I attempted to upload this to the Archive on YouTube for safekeeping and Merlin blocked it worldwide, as I'm sure you knew they would. At least they're consistent. Irrational, but consistent.
This show is best remembered for a technical screw-up which led to Mr Smith stopping everything and starting over during Formaldehyde. There are signs that he's not happy early on, certainly in terms of his body language. Once they stop he mentions that it was out of tune and that it felt weird. If, as in my case the song has been repeatedly committed to memory, there is a sense when listening back that he's right on the money. The vocals sound like they're operating slightly above and slightly below the notes he's aiming for. It never really takes off. So the band comes to a halt, tells everyone what's happening and starts over like it never happened. All of this while the gig wasd streaming live on the interwebs where there's no chance to remove the errors. Expertly done.
The setlist is heavy with material from TWOYL, of course, and includes 2 songs that have long since fallen off the running order whenever the band play; Bird of Prey and The Phone Book. There's also another airing of 2 Hearted Spider and it gives you an opportunity to compare and contrast the difference in style between Mr Smith playing a guitar, as he does here, or when he's just holding onto a microphone for dear life like he did during Werchter 2012.
I will add that the major difference between this video and the one currently available elsewhere on YouTube is that mine has the first 6 minutes of waiting around removed, coming in at the first glimpse of the band backstage. Enjoy the music ;)
