Village Underground TWOYL Launch Show 1st July 2013 (audio)

This was the launch party for Editors 4th album, The Weight of Your Love, which took place on July 1st at Village Underground. This was, of course, the official release date in the UK for the record. In attendance was a regular contributor to the Archive, GaryUK, who made another recording to add to the already impressive list of shows he's captured and shared with fans. On behalf of those of us who couldn't make it that night, a huge thank you to you, Sir.  It's great to hear about it, but always much better to actually hear it :)

In terms of their touring activities at that time and the sort of audiences they were entertaining, this was one of the rare opportunities that fans had to catch them play outside of a much larger festival setting. If you think that a week after this show, which was in front of about 700, they played Werchter. I believe on that night they were seen by about 85,000 people. That's quite a difference in scale.

It feels like the aftershocks of a situation that was probably thought of as having been resolved a year before are pulsing in the background during this show. Tom was uncharacteristically talkative on the night, which made for some good banter along the way but fuelled some strange tension that creeps underneath everything. For example, there's a brilliant exchange just before Bones starts up -

Tom - "At some point this evening, the post Glastonbury malaise will hit me."
Audience - "Have a shower!"
Tom - "Can you smell me?"

Conversely there's also some seriously black humour prior to Two Hearted Spider, the darkness level of which even manages to draw boos from the crowd, and resulting in them being told to "fuck off" by Mr Smith. It's referenced again before Racing Rats. Maybe it was early stage fatigue due to the increasing amount of times they were being asked in interviews to justify their decision to let Chris go, something that wouldn't be going away any time soon? Whatever the reason, it's somewhat ironic that the man who brought all those edges to Editors early music was also the reason behind the more edgy moments of this show, simply by his absence.

 Enjoy the music ;)
