XFM Residency - October 2007 (audio)

Editors appeared as guests on XFM 4 weeks in a row during October of 2007. In their 1 hour time slot, they played a selection of records they liked and provided some introductions for them along the way. The original broadcast contained all the tracks in the playlist below in full, but in keeping with the Archive's policy of not sharing things that bands can still make money off, this post contains only the introductions by the band and brief snippets of the music they played.

Some of the intros here are absolute comedy gold, particularly Russell's lead-in for Tourettes by Nirvana, or Chris referring to The Kiss by Judee Sill as "The smooth vibes of Judee Sill, there" in a true cheesy DJ style. I feel the same as when I heard Chris doing a podcast work for the first time after he became an ex-Editor, that he has a natural tone and presence for working in that area.

So 11 years after the fact, what do we learn from these dusty old recordings? We become aware of what Chris thinks about when he hears the song by Archie Bronson Outfit called Dead Funny (ask the children to leave the room), and that Tom has a well concealed sleazy sense of humour, something which is confirmed just before he introduces a track by Super furry Animals. For shame, Mr Smith. What is apparent here is that Ed is unfortunately not a natural at doing radio work, and his band mates are merciless in letting him know it. Bullying in the workplace, Mr Lay. There's a lawsuit in the making there for emotional distress and loss of dignity.

What is most evident is how new all of this was for them, and just how happy they sound to be there. It's almost like a possible insight into the kind of dynamic that existed within Editors at that time, with everyone providing punchlines for everybody else's jokes and taking things less seriously that they could have. It's a lot of fun to listen to.  So if you missed it way back when, you can now experience the entire month of Editors in residency at XFM all in one go, without the super-frustrating weekly wait that I and other fans had to go through at the time. Enjoy the chatter ;)
