The Trabendo, Paris 27th January 2006 (audio)

This show has a certain notoriety, thanks to the song at number 11.  It saw the 2nd airing of a new song called The Weight of the World.  It was premiered the night before at Tourcoing (le grand mix), on the 26th January 2006. Thanks to Yipman, a fellow Editors obsessive for the additional info.

The Weight of the World is, of course, the reworked version of the track Every Little Piece of Your Life, which was originally a demo made by the band when they were known as Snowfield. It's available as part of the Snowfield Demos, which you can check out right here at the blog by following this link.

So this was an event that pretty much made everyone's heart flutter. Things were evolving, the band were trying out new arrangements of old songs and the changes were definitely working. The other thing of note, to my mind anyway, is that they were really starting to learn about constructing setlists. In terms of tempo, the first 3 songs are uptempo and fast. Then Fall allows the audience to regain their collective composure, before Bullets and Find Yourself a Safe Place speed things up again. Camera is the moment of drama in the middle of the show, before You Are Fading and Munich allow everyone to go nuts again.  Open Your Arms provides a false ending to the gig, moving from its usual position as set-closer.

When the band return to the stage and play TWOYL, it's the moment where hardcore fans look at each other with open mouths, certain that they're recognising something but not being really sure what. It's a great pity that this song has vanished from the running order because it's a great little number. Then the show closes on a high with Fingers in the Factories which is dispatched quick and aggressively before the band exit to the sound of feedback.

If you're a fan of Mr Smith swearing you're in the right place, and it's not just in English either. Multilingual filth is definitely on the menu. It all sounds quite impressive, doesn't it? Of course I could just be ranting like a fanboy with a fairly obvious bias, so you should probably listen to the show and make you're own mind up. But it's an awesome gig, and I'm totally right. :) x
