These files came into my possession courtesy of Editors' forum moderator Gassjack, and he deserves a ton of respect and a mighty big hug if you're a regular reader of this blog. Without him, you'd be looking at another empty space out in here on the internet because I wouldn't have been a regular on the band's official forum and, by extension all these years later, I wouldn't be here sharing these files with you. He's that important to the story, and the lyric "Every little piece of your life, well it means something to someone" has never been more appropriate. Thanks again, Peter. Random acts of kindness can have profound consequences.
These are 8 fan-shot videos taken by a member of the band's old official forum called "boyleastlikelyto" (Ivo). They are selected tracks from his travels to 3 shows Editors played in 2005 at the Marquee, the Zodiac and the Barfly in London. They offer an opportunity to witness the band still when they were still at the "reach out and you can touch them" stage. Within a few years they would be filling much bigger venues and whilst the intimacy would diminish, the intensity of performance would actually go up. That isn't to suggest that there isn't any intensity here. Oh no. I've mentioned before when referring to these really early clips that their energy levels were ridiculous. It was almost as if these weren't songs that they simply felt like playing, more that they were 3 or 4 minute bursts of controlled tension that they had to release in order to help bring their adrenaline levels down to a nice, bearable level again.
One of the coolest things about these fan-shot videos from 14 years ago (yowsa!), is that you never know when you're going to see something different in songs you already know well. Check out the lyric change at the beginning of Find Yourself as Safe Place as an example. That line reminds me of the subversive cruelty inherent in The One I Love by R.E.M., where Mr Stipe refers to his love as "...a simple prop to occupy my time". Brutal.
Enjoy the memories as we prepare for new ones...
