Pukkelpop 18th August 2005

If only everyone involved in the Editors story had just been born ten years later, the band and their associates as well as the fans. We'd all be living in a glorious era of sharing clips that you could watch with glee on those gigantic, cinema-sized televisions that rich folks have in their houses. This video would have been from 2015 and it would have looked super-sexy. There would be no pixelation, perfect sound and smiling faces all around. Instead, we were all conceived and birthed when we were and this is a clip from the infancy of streaming on the web, which means that once again I have to genuflect before you and apologise for the picture quality. I'm just passing on the material, but I acknowledge its disfigurements.

On the 18th of August 2005, Editors took to the stage at the Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium.  I imagine that it's quite tricky to connect with an audience in an intimate club setting, and then also to be able to establish that same rapport with a huge festival crowd. In spite of the low quality video you can still see very clearly just what it was that has made them into such an unrestrained live proposal. The guitars actually sound angry at times during this set, and I know that seems like animism on my part but they really do. There's a bit when You Are Fading is played where Tom is dancing around the stage with his guitar hanging free and the feedback and noise that comes off it is perfect for that song. That track has always been an exercise in the band throwing a lasso around it and trying to keep it from taking off completely anyway, so the chaotic burst of those six strings is very appropriate. I know I'm betraying my own personal preference for feedback again but when they play live Editors can sometimes reveal a great sense of how to use different extreme sounds to great effect, most recently when playing Hallelujah (So Low).

Anyway, on with the show. Enjoy the music ;)
