The Lemming Archive: Radio Session at 3FM Studios 22nd October 2005

Appearing as part of their first day off since 1999, according to Mr Urbanowicz (ho ho), here's Editors dropping by to play and chat with 3FM in October 2005. This was a part of the Back Room campaign that was so prolonged and grueling, it almost managed to derail their ability to record their second album. Once thing about listening to this stuff from so long ago is just how confident and loose in interviews they were. Self-belief buried within knife-sharp sarcasm. Check out their response to the question "Why are Editors so popular?" for an example. Then there's the admission that they did listen to Joy Division (shock, horror!), but that there wasn't an influence because they were too young. Too young. That fact alone is enough to make me wince uncomfortably. Then Chris throws some serious shade in the direction Bernard Sumner, just to round things off and make it worse.

Musically there's an extended version of Munich, which is slower in tempo than usual to these ears, as well as Blood, Camera and Bullets. There's even a quiz in the middle of the show, which is as random as it is weird, but lots of fun to listen to. The DJ has a little bit of a trip up in that he believes Radiohead are responsible for the album Definitely Maybe. Hmmmm. There's a chance to squirm as Tom is invited to imitate Michael Stipe, something which he wisely declines to do. Worth noting that in 3 years, the band would be touring with RE.M. which I'm sure they would have laughed at if you'd told them in 2005. After the quiz there's an audience Q+A with the band, where we discover that Chris is allergic to nuts. It's amazing what you learn and where you find it out, isn't it?
