In the slow, quiet spaces between the fuzzy thunderstorms of activity, side-projects will flourish.
Editors were still away during April, but both Justin and Elliott had other things going on, with some participation from the man with the low slung bass, Russell. Mr Williams and King Leetch played a DJ night in Hamburg at Planet Indie on the 21st, and Elliott continued to spin vinyl the following night, appearing at the Blossom Street Social on the 22nd. You can listen to a replay of his song selection that night by going to the BSS mixcloud site here, and it's very much worth your time. The boy's definitely got some savoury taste in music. He'll also be playing at Ramona in Manchester on a night called Pure Verities towards the end of May.
Justin took part in the reformation of a band that put a temporary halt to their ascendency back in 2007, yourcodenameis:milo. My understanding is that the original plan was to get back together and play some shows in 2020 to raise funds for the Cluny in Newcastle, which was their base camp back in the day. However, as with a lot of other plans and expectations, Covid got involved and the script was reqritten. So by April of this year the Cluny managed to secure funding from elsewhere, yourcodenameis:milo graced the stage of the venue and the benefit gigs became a source of donation for the Bobby Robson Foundation instead. A lovely gesture.
This doesn't appear to be the end of the story either, as the band have been booked to play Arctangent in Bristol on the 16th August. This will mean a tight schedule for Justin if he's also acting as an Editor at the time, because that show happens to fall right between their gigs in Bulgaria on the 13th and Slovakia on the 20th. Then again, there was that rumour that Justin has been able to train his body through yoga and pilates to function without sleep, allowing more time to record/perform/photograph/write/cultivate a strong beard etc. As I say, these are just rumours (no lawsuits please).
The Cluny is actually an important part of the story of my own Editors fandom, given that was the venue I was supposed to see them play at for the first time in 2006. The tickets sold so quickly that it became apparent they were going to be able to sell it out and then some, so the gig was moved to the city instead. If you've ever seen the inside of the Cluny then you'll know just how intimate that would have been.
As quiet as it's been of late, the machine begins rolling again at the end of May when Editors play Festival Art Rock in France. See you at the beginning of June for a recap.
