Up next is another date on the ongoing EBM campaign as captured by our
man on the ground in Germany, Sven. It's everything you've come to
expect from one of his recordings, and there's a lot of subtleties on
display here that I don't even remember hearing in his last one. The
electronics during Heart Attack sound more pronounced during the verses,
for example, as does Russell's bass on the outro. To those of us who
listen carefully, rather than simply listening to Editors' music, this
kind of thing is the purest form of legal narcotic. Thanks again Sven,
we're lucky to have you around.
Unlike earlier dates this October, which saw Frankenstein and No Harm dropping off the set, now they're back. There had been speculation that Tom had been wrestling with some kind vocal problem, meaning that the ascending the summit to reach the higher notes was proving problematic. Certainly during songs like Vibe and All the Kings where he's pursued the lower register, in contrast to the studio take. No Harm would not be the most appropriate track to attempt if your upper limits have been temporarily reduced curtailed. The voice is, after all, an instrument that needs to be looked after.
Now, however, No Harm is back in rotation and we can only hope that this signals an end to whatever laryngeal laments have been occurring. It's like he's tentatively reintroducing it, and I think that attempting it late in the show is a smart move, giving his voice a chance to be fully stretched and warmed up. I'm also really digging the drum intro before the keys start, and the twinkling electronics over the outro.
Editors' recorded output is something which is supposedly cemented in place as part of their history, but these live alterations only prove how malleable that history can still be. Enjoy the music ;)
