Editors Instagram - June 2022

Editors played Vestrock on the 3rd of June and highlights of the show were broadcast a day later on Kink. There's a distinct possibility that the elusive figure onstage with the band and taking photos at regular points was one Rahi Rezvani, but in the absence of any kind of official evidence like snaps or videos taken by the man himself being posted, it might just be speculation on my part. I'm pretty sure though.

On the 4th of June the band were due to play at the ironically titled In This Together Festival. As you can read for yourself in the photo above, there were some unavoidable weather-related interventions on the day. This resulted in "The Editors'" set being scrapped, as well as the slot belonging to "Soul to Souls" (thanks to some poor punctuation on the sign). Luckily, however, they worked as hard as they could to get the stage ready for Noel Gallagher (note the larger more bold font on the sign) who eventually went on to play that night. So to recap, we're in it together...unless you're The Editors and Soul to Souls. In which case, you can sod off.

The 6th saw the trailer teaser clip for Karma Climb released, and it was here that the information flood we'd been waiting for finally arrived. The next day, the full video hit YouTube. It was shot by the brothers Lockey under their Hand Held Cine Club moniker. This was the first time we saw Blanck Mass doing his thing as a functioning member of the band. Then came the news of a collection of tour dates taking in the UK and Europe:-

You can always keep up with the latest dates and news on Editors' touring activities by checking in with the band's unpaid public relations officer, Hannah by visiting the band's online forum here.

If that was still insufficient to satisfy your consumerist desires, we finally got the title for album 7, EBM (Every Body's Miserable) and a track listing. It is as follows:-

Heart Attack
Picturesque
Karma Climb
Kiss
Silence
Strawberry Lemonade
Vibe
Educate
Strange Intimacy

There are a bunch of different formats available, all of which you can check out at the store using this link. The one I bought, which was the limited edition cd version containing a laminated handkerchief that was used by Tom during one of his frequent crying sessions has since sold out, unfortunately. It cost me £7025.99 but I reckon it's money very well spent. I plan to harvest the DNA within and manufacture a new band called Editears, where all 5 musicians will be indentical clones of Mr Smith. It will be uncomfortable, strange and sad but very danceable at the same time. Stay tuned for updates.

For the first time in their 7 album stretch, none of the song titles go above two words and the actual title is an acronym, which I found interesting. An emphasis on brevity and direct, focused effectiveness over wordplay? Based on the three songs we've heard at the time of writing, I would suggest that it could be the case. We'll know soon enough.

On the 28th it was revealed that Elliott is making music with Chris Massey for an as yet unreleased project, so there's something else to look out for on the horizon.
Finally, as weirdly as the month began with the In It Together cancellation, there was another one on the 29th when the Wide Skies and Butterflies festival pulled the plug. There were a few reasons cited, but the main ones seem to have been centered around money in one way or another. I think we're all used to big musical events being separate from life, each being their own oasis, impervious to the wider effects of society. Unfortunately, things like the lingering financial damage resulting from the sustained battering the music industry took during covid, as well as developing issues like a cost of living crisis means that sometimes they fall as casualties to the very problems they once appeared immune to. Glastonbury was safe because it has a history, with it being almost as a rite of passage to some, as well as a line up that contained a lot of names people are interested in seeing. Wide Skies Festival seems to have suffered from the crime of being new, untested and trying to make its mark in a climate where people are suddenly having to really scrutinise their finances and define what disposable income really means. Hopefully they'll try again down the line.
