'Twas the night before Smith and Burrows' second album...
Confined to barracks as most of the world is, artists have had to get creative with the ways they promote their music.A gig accompanied by a radio interview in the city where the band is playing would once have been effective as a way to start the conversion process, certainly on a local level. But what happens when the traditional live-and-in-person pathways to informing the world have been temporarily obscured? Technology has provided an alternative to authentic proximity, which is why we find two UK grounded pop cats appearing here on German radio. It does have that kind of intimate small venue gig feel to it, because there's a little bit of chat between the songs where they introduce them. It's nice.
When I'm capturing these radio shows there's usually a mire of terrible
music to wade through in order to get to the good stuff, but not
tonight. Radio Eins played Heavenly by Cigarettes After Sex, which means
they automatically get a free pass on whatever else they decided to air
as part of their programming. Love. That. Band.
What we get here are four pre-recorded acoustic tracks broadcast on Radio Eins on the 18th February 2021. This was literally the penultimate day before Only Smith and Burrows is Good Enough comes out, and their history as a one-album band is officially altered forever. This pairing is, in my opinion, the therapy that Tom needs before he dons the black cloak and returns to bothering shadows and avoiding sunlight with Editors. Andy encourages his pop tendencies like nobody else.
I've left the German introduction in place for all you lovely fans in that region because...well, you're worth it. Congrats to Tom and Andy for getting to the finish line. Enjoy ;)
