Editors Instagram - Complete 2019 Collection

After some thoughtful introspection, Mr Williams sums up the last decade

December 2019 was nearly the end of an era...but not quite. I think that will happen once the Black Gold tour is complete and the lights go out on chapter 2 of the Editors storybook. It was a month with greatly reduced promotional duties, but a very important appointment with Studio Brussel for their annual charity event Music for Life. It's quality over quantity. Here's the highlights of the past 31 days currently available at the Archive:-

On the 18th, 3FM held a charity auction where they put a signed copy of Black Gold up for sale, and it went on to raise 422 Euros for good causes. Also in December, and this is surely an act of masochism, the Smith clan upped and moved house. A ballsy move because that's the kind of activity that would break lesser mortals at this time of year. Moving house is no joke. In fact, let's recap that list that psychologists cite as the most stressful events in human life:-

Death of a loved one
Divorce
Moving
Imprisonment
Personal injury or illness
Not being able to hear the E4 sessions with Chris
Marriage
Dismissal from work
Wondering what Dream Dark as Your Heaven sounds like

Please note that a couple of those might be incorrect, maybe even totally fabricated.

The band expanded their own online Archive to include all the singles that Editors have released so far. The stories from other fans has really expanded the scope of what the music means, and the effects it has beyond sales charts and the volume of the crowd singing back at them during shows. It's been assimilated into people's lives in lots of different ways, soundtracking some of the best and worst times they experience.

As we're beginning a new decade, I took some time to look back at the one we just passed through. I know that because of Black Gold the last few months have been exclusively concerned with professional reminiscing for Editors. I imagine that's been a source of fleeting happiness, but probably more of a frustration that the creative momentum has had to be put on hold to accommodate it. A consistency since the Pilot and Snowfield days has been the concepts of longevity and progress, and now they're prevented from actively continuing those ideas because they are in a cycle of acknowledging that they've achieved it.

If you go back exactly 10 years to January 2010, they were already involved in doing a summary of their history, suggesting that maybe life does move in a circle. The promotional campaign for In This Light and on This Evening was moving forward, Chris was still an Editor, Rahi hadn't shot any film of them, Justin and Elliott were 2 years away from joining the band and that moment at Werchter which effectively became the first song danced to at the wedding between Belgium and Editors, hadn't even taken place. So much has changed in a decade but more than that, so much has happened and been achieved. It was time managed well and utilised with purpose.

All of this and we never even got the biggest question of December; should Elliott go blonde again? Sir, you managed to pull off wearing a blue suit and still retain your credibility as an artist, and your dignity as a human being. An almost impossible task, and so if blonde is calling I don't believe you should fear answering in the affirmative.

As is traditional with the end of year Instagram posts, I'm including a zip file containing all of December's goodies and a larger one that has everything from the entire year 2019 in it. Happy New Year everyone, it's looking like a good one ;)
