Times Online Podcast with Peter Paphides 30th January 2006

I didn't have a recording date for this but after some deductive work using Hannah's gigography (thanks again for this excellent feature on your site H), I can confidently state that it took place backstage at their Paradiso show in the Netherlands on the 30th January 2006. That's 13 years ago to the day from when I'm posting it here at the Archive for the first time. The interview between Chris, Tom and Peter Pahides is all about the current activities and future plans of Editors in 2006 and as we know, a lot has changed since then. It's tempting to highlight some of those things but after rediscovering this recording for the first time since I ripped it, I'll let you experience it for yourself like I did. Even those of you who are the hardest of the most hardcore fans may discover some details of Editors' back story you didn't know.

The full podcast had clips of Editors' music in it and so I gently removed them in the interests of not ripping the band off, or being flagged by YouTube for copyright infringement. Even with those fade-outs one thing you will spot is that they totally mixed up the titles of two songs, claiming that Munich is the latest single whilst playing the full studio take of Open Your Arms. A screw-up with a silver lining because if you were one of the people who listened to this when it originally came online, you'd probably have already heard Munich on the radio or elsewhere. Instead, you got to hear a Back Room track in its place. Bonus material indeed.

One thing I will comment on is The Weight of the World. The impression here is that just the act of completing the track had given them a feeling of relief, primarily because it affirmed that songwriting was still something they could do. It seems to indicate that there was some kind of a doubt there, which could have been borne of the pressure of following up a collection of songs that had already been successful. Mostly though it was probably due to the huge amount of touring they were doing, which utterly removed them from the process of being creative for such a long period of time that it messed with their confidence.

I don't have an audio capture of the very first time TWOTW was played, but if you'd like to hear the second time then you can do so by checking out this link to their Paris Trabendo gig on the 27th January 2006. Enjoy the chatter ;)
