Up next is a recording from the twilight of the VI OLENCE campaign and it's a fantastic way to end the year. Provided by a new friend to the Archive called sebi2704, this is an audience recording from their Stuttgart gig on the 20th November 2018. Many thanks to you for the green light to share your work here, it's very much appreciated. Files are being shared here in their original FLAC format in accordance with the taper's wishes. I don't know if it's the equipment getting better or the techniques of the people operating it, but the bootlegs we've been getting from this tour in particular have been sounding so damn good.
This was of course the section of the touring schedule that saw the band reintroduce The Boxer to their show, and listening to it here it sounds as good as it did back in 2009. That's not to disrespect Chris in any way but more to compliment the enduring nature of that composition, and the skill of the 5 people playing it to be able to manifest the spirit of what made it so effective back then. If you're a fan of feedback, as I wholeheartedly am, then the start of Someone Says will give you butterflies. I like it when they occasionally dirty things up.
A look at the setlist reveals a set that, in terms of the albums it represents, is abundantly from the new record and more compellingly from The Back Room. It's almost as though in relation to where we are now in the timeline, both the end and the start are the most heavily acknowledged with the space in between only alluded to slightly less. As we saw from the severely downplayed, often scarce celebrations of the 10th anniversary days of their first two records they don't spend time revisiting the past too often, so I wonder if this was even a concerted effort when the setlist was being designed? A statement that as strong and essential to the Editors story as the older material is, the band believe that their latest recordings are as good as if not better than them and what's more they'll mix it all up to prove it.
I feel like we're getting closer to the idea of Editors having amassed a body of work, rather than a series of secluded collections representing specific eras of their musical life. It's something that they were hinting at as far back as 2005; being a group that sticks around for a long time and builds something. I think this and other setlists from the VI OLENCE campaign hint at the ease with which older compositions can sit with new and recent ones, without interrupting the flow of the live experience in any way. They all seem to compliment each other. Maybe we're heading towards a situation where they're all simply identifiable as Editors songs, rather than Back Room or ITLAOTE songs? Enjoy the music ;)
