In This Light and on This Evening Press Materials 2009

"We laughed and smiled a lot……we are capable of this do you know!?" - from Tom's biography of ITLAOTE

Every once in a while when I'm updating the Archive I find something I'd forgotten I even had. This was tucked away in a folder from 2011, but it's origins lie 2 years earlier than that. I've since reassigned it to its proper place. What the zip file being shared here contains are 4 word documents containing the press materials that went out to the media before In This Light and on This Evening was released. They're all watermarked with the Kitchenware Records and PIAS logos and as well as the standard "Here's what the band want to achieve with their new album" statement from the label, there's also some personalised writing from Tom which makes this a fascinating little time capsule. It's even more striking that next year marks the 10th anniversary of that album becoming a commercial entity. It was also the last long player they put out on Kitchenware, which closed 3 years later in May 2012. The observant cats among you will also note that the prospective release date for ITLAOTE given in the release is out by a few weeks, why that is I have no clue.

As a taster, here's what Mr Smith wrote as a summary on one of the pages to each track on the album, the link to the zip file containing the rest is below. Enjoy ;)

In This Light And On This Evening
‘The world’s a living-breathing thing and it can surprise you. Something you’ve seen a million times before can still take your breath away in a moment.’

Bricks And Mortar
‘It’s all about the groove….man.’

Papillon
‘Everyone wants to escape from something and everyone loves Steve McQueen.’

You Don’t Know Love
‘Sung about someone haunted by love and the pursuit of it, a fictional character though, someone I dreamt up one day. To me this song is beautifully barren and cold; you need to do your coat up whilst walking the streets of Berlin.’

The Big Exit
‘A love song.
A song of unspoken understanding.’

The Boxer
“A bruised full moon play fights with the stars”
‘Beneath which we all take to our nights out with the excitement they deserve.
Alongside us drunken fools fight to the death over nothing in particular.’

Like Treasure
‘A mouthful of chocolate followed by a mouthful of flies.’

Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool
‘A mouthful of raw meat followed by a mouthful of flies.
This might be the best pop song Editors have ever written. Flood fought its corner for a long while, as none of us really loved it to start with. He’s a clever man Flood.’

Walk The Fleet Road
‘I would say I’m a worrier, I would say generally my glass is half empty and I would say I take things too seriously.
Sometimes I need to be told.’
Sung as in conversation with the one I love.
