Another post here at the Archive with some next level vagueness for you all now. It's a US radio broadcast featuring the band, but I have no details as to when and where exactly the show was recorded. It was aired in the States on September 6th 2007 to coincide with some dates they were undertaking there, but beyond that I don't have a clue. There's a part where Tom mentions it being a great festival, but that doesn't really narrow it down at all. The setlist is incomplete, obviously to fit in with the limited broadcast time available, but you'll see that there are zero tracks from An End Has a Start which came out in June of 2007, two months prior to this airing. That could be a clue to the time of recording because they're still ending with Open Your Arms over Fingers, which places it at some point during the Back Room campaign. Loose ends. They suck. As ever, if you are able to fill in any of the blanks then drop me a line and I'll tell the world how great you are.
The original broadcast I got had one half of the hour long show as Editors and the other as R.E.M., which if you were unaware is an interesting portent for the future. Tom was a big fan of R.E.M. and they ended up touring with them in 2008. More than that, Editors covered Orange Crush while Mr Stipe and co covered Munich. The appreciation evidently blossomed into something mutual.
Just to prove that I'm not out here hailing the virtues of absolutely everything purely because it's Editors related, there is a singular issue with this recording that will have you wondering why it wasn't fixed before broadcast. The folks at the mixing desk were either asleep, hearing impaired or just or in a bad mood with Chris, because there are times here where it sounds like he's playing on a different stage or dropping by via Skype. The interplay between his and Tom's guitars are what give most of those early Editors numbers their dynamism, rough versus smooth, but on all the tracks here there's an undeniable difference in volume that adjusts the balance and throws things off slightly. If you're hearing the band for the first time then it might just pass you by, but to these gloomily-tested ears it's obvious. Also, the increased volume on Mr Smith's guitar means you can hear it expiring in his hands towards the end of Open Your Arms due to some electrical issues.
If you've been a semi-regular reader of this blog for a while then you'll have already guessed that even though I've got complaints, I'm posting it anyway. I originally received this as four FLAC tracks, two for Editors and two for R.E.M. and they contained all the Westwood One ads and station ident. For ease of download I've trimmed off all the fat and made it into one, tidy little file that contains all 23 minutes of the show and no filler. For all its flaws this is still a little piece of the band's collective history and it would be wrong not to include it. If you're of the same mind, then the links below await you ;)
