Tom and Chris on MTV Subterranean 2nd April 2006

Here's another lost clip that's been occupying a digital waiting room on a hard drive for about 17 years or so. Four minutes of two young men who at this point already had, and would then go on to, create some excellent music together. Picture quality is a little wobbly, but for the fact that I don't think this is available anywhere online, I'm posting it as is.

If my memory banks are functioning correctly, I recall Subterranean being the follow up show to MTV's 120 Minutes? Or maybe it ran in tandem, I can't fully remember. This was the channel allowing alternative music into its programming when MTV used to be predominantly about playing "the hits", which was obviously a long, long time ago.

The interviewer is Jim Shearer and even though he gives it his best shot, there's an inherent theme of awkwardness throughout the encounter. I believe he was still new to being a VJ, as they were known at the time, and equally Mr Smith and Mr Urbanowicz were still getting accustomed to media grillings. Not an ideal point for one to meet the other, but it actually works out OK.

In case you're wondering, the game they refer to as having played at a bar is called shuffleboard. Strangely, it was always thought that this had come to dominate their backstage pursuits around the time they played Werchter in 2013. It was mentioned in a few interviews then, but it seems the foundations of their addiction to it were actually cemented a good 7 years earlier.

The final segment is Tom and Chris being asked what bums them out. Enjoy the discomfort ;)

brought to you with lots and lots of lemming-love ;) x
