This is Editors' stop off in London as part of the 3 date launch tour here in the UK for VI OLENCE last month, and recorded on the night by Nuwebb. Thanks a lot for making your work available, it's graciously received and very much appreciated. The files are being shared in their original FLAC format in accordance with the taper's wishes.
A show that must have had multiple pulses racing, here's a little background as to why.
Editors have experienced some oddness in their lifetime. Not lots, but certainly enough. They had a show raided by armed police in Cologne back in 2007 (neighbours complained about the noise), a near riot in March of 2010 in Folkestone and a fire alarm that emptied the Cambridge Corn Exchange in that same month. Mostly the difficulties are of a technical nature and they can be fixed quickly, for example a broken guitar string or a microphone that snaps in half mid song. Sometimes though, there are technical disasters that can totally derail the even smoothest of evenings.
October 13th 2015 at the Hammersmith Apollo was an event that proved to be a test of both endurance and patience for everyone involved. The set was plagued with sound problems so severe, it forced the band offstage for half an hour. They completed the gig but at the expense of a couple of numbers which fell by the wayside due to time constraints. It was a night where, as performers, most of the things they'd worried about happening actually did and it no doubt left an impression on them. There was probably a collective agreement that they should never experience that again.
Almost 2 and a half years later, they returned to the capital to play the Clapham Grand as part of the series of three special dates which acted as an album launch for E6 which was about to be released. The two stops prior to London in Manchester and Birmingham had gone to plan, with no standout moments of concern at all. However, as the band play Violence for the first time at the Clapham Grand Tom's microphone starts acting up, making it impossible to amplify his voice. You can only imagine the thoughts that are formulating in his and the rest of the other Editors' minds at this point.
Is this Hammersmith all over again?
One thing that I've always said in the past is that a good Editors show can be great or just OK, depending on the audience reaction. The feedback they give and their enthusiasm/apathy can really affect the course of a gig. This time around, the crowd act as troubleshooters and let the band know exactly what the problem is. It's a happy little moment in an otherwise potentially grim situation, and I smiled when I heard it. Determined to make this right, the group do a 2nd take of Violence and then it's alright from there until the end of the evening.
With this recording it now means that we have recordings of all three dates on the UK mini-tour they did. Ahhh, the sweet feeling of a complete set. Enjoy the music ;)
