Berlin Festival 6th September 2014 ARTE Highlights

**UPDATED 14th October 2017 - Added full audio of the set, the result of a joint effort between myself and Hannah. Thanks again for the assistance ;)

Bad news straight away; this is just a highlights video, which means that some of the set is missing. The running order below has some horrible red asterisks for each song that wasn't broadcast (although we now have the full set in audio form). Take that in, shake it off and watch it anyway because this is an excellent artefact from the TWOYL tour campaign. This was from that era of the band where Mr Williams sidestepped away to breathe in the sweet air of electro-pop as Y.O.U., allowing Mr Nicholas Willes to become an Editor on keys and guitar. As a point of trivia, there were only 4 more shows played in 2014 after this and then they disappeared to record In Dream in Crear.

I could be wrong but I don't believe that Honesty has appeared on a setlist since 2014, and it sounds great here. The rendition of Nothing has the original, longer introduction that was trimmed down when the band played their recent run of festival shows this year. I'm going to restate a bold claim, but I really do believe that Two Hearted Spider only ever achieves its full potential as a live song when Tom isn't playing guitar while singing. There's something about there being no physical barrier between him and the audience that seems to allow him to go deeper into the moment. Obviously, the high bar was set at Werchter 2012 for this track and I don't believe it's ever been bettered. Yet every time he's delivered it with only a microphone and the right atmosphere courtesy of the audience and the other 4 Editors, it usually gets pretty close.
If you want to hear some cussing and let's face it, who doesn't love some good old fashioned obscenity once in a while, some technical problems with Ed's drums lead to another "Tom Swears" incident just before Bones. He tells the audience what instrument it is that Mr Lockey plays, turning the air all the shades of blue in the process. Oh goodness!

When you look back, as I'm wont to do, it's hard to believe how much has mileage they've covered as a band since the TWOYL tour, and how much work they put into doing it all. 3 years from now I wonder what new milestones we'll be celebrating and looking back on?

No sense of doubt, or what you could achieve...

Well indeed. Enjoy the show ;)
