Hamburg Mehr Theater 8th November 2015 (audio)

While we wait and look forward to the next revelation in the ongoing Editors journey, here's an echo from an era that's already been and gone. Here's Sven's recording of their Hamburg Mehr Theater show on the 8th of November 2015. Thanks again, Sven. It's appreciated.

As you'll hear just after Blood is played, November of 2015 was a point of change for the band. Justin Lockey returned to civilian life and fatherhood again, being replaced by Nic Willes on guitar.

It might just be me, but I can definitely hear the differences in playing between Nic and Justin. I think Mr Willes is slightly more loose in his technique. Not sloppy, just more comfortable in drifting over the traditionally defined edges and parameters of where notes should sit. Whereas Justin always seems to be more precise and deliberate. It's not a criticism of either gentleman because those differences, and others like them, are what make the world interesting and I welcome them.

This really is a great showcase for the In Dream campaign that accompanied that album's release, and I enjoyed getting reacquainted with live takes of those songs, especially Forgiveness and Life is a Fear and Salvation. There's so many nice touches here and there. The way that Russell's bass comes rolling in on Sugar always makes me think of a thunderstorm arriving, and that "100% Editors" style opening line of Formaldehyde where Tom asks if we'd butcher his love to understand it? Is it a quesion or a request? For all the slow, beautiful atmosphere contained within it, it still tickles me that No Harm was first discovered by fans through something so delightfully frivolous as an online treasure hunt.

Listen out for an extremely annoyed audience member mistakenly believing that the whole band are going off stage for some reason, only to have that reason revealed with the first notes of Smokers being played.

As much as I love these In Dream live recordings, I still reserve a small amount of sadness in my soul for never having been able to hear La Goswell singing with the band outside of the studio. I think it would have been awesome. Enjoy the music ;)
