DRadio Wissen Radio Session 23rd August 2015

As part of a promotional trip to Germany in August 2015, Tom made some time for DRadio Wissen. As well as a great deal of in-depth chat with the man himself, it was also a chance to hear acoustic versions of Life is a Fear, Blood, and the public debut of In Dream track All the Kings. The 39 minute podcast that accompanied the release of the acoustic songs covered a lot of ground, including the meanings of the In Dream songs and the writing process behind it. There's particular reference to the time in Scotland and the effect of environment on recording and writing. La Goswell gets a mention, and we learn that their duet on E5 is nothing like I Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher, which is obviously hugely disappointing. Can you imagine how cool that would have been? An opportunity missed, I reckon. The anniversary of the Back Room gets touched on, as well as the "ownership" of the older Editors songs. There's a piece of shocking news revealed during the chatter; Mr Smith is not a fan of bananas. No sir.

If you've heard Blood a few times then you'll spot a lyric change in the at the beginning of the song. There used to be nothing harder than keeping a promise, but not this time around. The way it's reborn as a very simple piano song here is magical, similar to the way that he infused Life is a Fear with a different mood for the 3ème Gauche Session around the same time. Speaking of that song, I think it's the lack of bass on LIAF that allows it to glide the way it does. From the opening notes it just feels like it's in the air. Music is a strange thing for me because sometimes it has an effect that I find very difficult to put into cohesive words.
