Paredes de Coura Festival Portugal 2008 (audio/fan video)

"This is Chris Urbanowicz on the electric...6 string...Rickenbacker...violin."

The gig in this post was at the Paredes de Coura Festival on the 1st August 2008, and there's some good and bad points. It was sourced from a low quality radio broadcast and the rough, unbalanced nature of the mixing here means that there are times when, for example,  Chris' guitar is very, very loud. That's great for a guy like me because like me because I love listening to Chris play, and I appreciate the finer subtleties of noise in music. The downside is that there are moments where the other folks in the band are a little bit drowned in sound, as it were. In an ironic twist, Chris' guitar actually packs up completely toward the end of Blood.  The worst crime of all is that No Sound But the Wind was missing from the radio show, likely due to its status at the time as an unreleased Editors song. However, it was filmed by a fan on the night and you can watch what they captured using the link below.

I've listened to a lot of Editors gigs in my tenure as a fan, and I'm having trouble recalling times when they've sounded so...messy in the delivery of their music. That's not intended as an insult, just an observation that they didn't seem as restricted in their performance on this night, that they were able to be a lot more relaxed with the material. It feels really, really loose in places and the end of Fingers acts as a perfect summary. They finish in a blizzard of guitar effects and distortion, which were prevalent all throughout this set, with Tom playing the call and response game with Ed before they depart. Obviously the shabby nature of the stream quality that it came from plays a part but this still feels like it has beautiful, sloppy edges all over the place that even the most high quality recording devices would have captured. Love it. Enjoy the music ;)
