Rolling Stone Weekender 8th November 2014 (Highlights)

Initially, this was supposed to be a full electric show and the penultimate live obligation of the TWOYL campaign. They'd played in Mexico the week before but between then and a couple of days before this show, Justin was sidelined due to ill health. This spoke to the new dynamic of Editors mk2, and Mr Lockey's contributions therein, because rather than try to wing it as a four piece they chose a much, much more treacherous path that could very well have ended with them blowing it. Big time. In true, contrary Editors fashion they decided to put on a full length acoustic gig, something which the band had never done before. Sure, they'd done in-store appearances, radio slots and charity gigs but usually with a reduced set. This was a headline show, after all, and in front of a crowd that were expecting he full Editors workout when they bought the ticket. Lots of energy, lots of noise and loss of hearing for a couple of days afterwards. This was not what was advertised.
You only have to watch the interview at the start of the pro-shot highlights video to realise that they weren't taking this lightly. The trepidation is obvious, and Tom's wearing the look of a man who seems to be repeatedly screaming "what have I done" in his head. Such was the rush to prepare for the gig that they were rehearsing right up until the night they played. There are even times during the set that they're still working things out in terms of the sound (see just before Nothing for an example). Lest we forget, there were only 5 days between their show in Mexico and this one.

This gig is the sight and sound of a band having to think on their feet and deliver in a different way than we're used to seeing, and it has a lot to recommend it. The setlist is a mixture of their first 4 albums and it's wonderful to see Distance get an airing again. I don't remember having heard Munich played this way before or since, with the keys and tambourine from Ed. We also get to hear The Phone Book, which I still maintain has some of Tom's best lyrics in it. You'll also notice a very early public airing of Forgiveness, which would later be released on the In Dream album but not for almost a year later.

There's a clear intimacy in the proceedings and a softness to the music, which is always a nice change. The whole thing has an MTV Unplugged kind of vibe to it, and some of my favourite performances by the bands I love have been on that show (The Cure, R.E.M. and Nirvana spring to mind).

There are two versions of the show available here, one from Trebor and one from HomeAtBerlin, as well as a 5 song highlights video broadcast by WDR and some fan-shot footage. Check it out, enjoy the music :)
HomeAtBerlin's Radio Rip
This is a German radio broadcast that was provided by a friend of the Archive, HomeAtBerlin. Many thanks to you for sharing, it's appreciated.

You'll notice that this isn't the full show, with the broadcast ending midway through Bricks and Mortar to keep with the allotted time slot of the station that aired it. It's a shame in that I don't believe we have a complete recording of the gig, even though WDR probably have it on film because they were able to supply a highlights video (see below).  Even so, this is an excellent sounding recording that will really give you an idea of what this historic Editors gig sounded like.

Pure FM Recording
This arrived in the world courtesy of Trebor, and as Editors fans we should all be extremely grateful. Huge thanks to you for making your work available. The files will be appearing here exactly as they were shared originally, in FLAC form and with no alterations in accordance with the taper's wishes. Please note that the Pure FM broadcast is incomplete, Dancing in the Dark is cut and Papillon aren't there, but it's worth the download for the chance to hear what remains in FM quality stereo. By way of consolation, there are fan-shot videos of the missing tracks below.

These videos are for the collectors among you who enjoy having the source material.  These are the clips in their raw state before they were uploaded to youtube, and as such they're pretty big. But if, like me, you just have to have them...
