Haldern Pop August 8th 2008 (DVD/audio/video)

By 2008 the band were veterans of playing live, due to the often excessive amount of dates on both the Back Room and AEHAS campaigns. You can hear them applying small changes to their back catalogue, like rearranging Blood slightly so that Chris' guitar features more during the first verse. Then there's the rarity of a solo intro from Tom to All Sparks while they wait for Ed to be ready. At about 1 minute 47 seconds of Lights he does something that you don't get on the studio recording; a scream in the gap between the song temporarily stopping and starting again that just makes it...more. I love it when the band dress their dolls in different clothes for the night.

Fun things to watch out for at Haldern :-

  • Grumpy lady who verbally responds "No" to Tom's "Is everyone OK?" inquiry before Open Up
  • The impressive moment in When Anger Shows when Tom manages to complete a full circle of his piano while singing.
  • A moshpit during Lights.
  • Spinning Russell.
  • Tom ascending those great heights atop his piano during Lights and Smokers.
  • Chris' pointy footwear as it hits the effects pedals.
  • Slow singalong intro to Munich.
  • Russell and Ed can singing backing vocals on a song that isn't Smokers.
  • End of song freakout during Fingers, including Tom/Ed's vocals and drums back and forth.

Enjoy the music ;)

Bonus Materials
I'm posting this by way of a tribute to Chris Ridge who has since passed away, and it's some footage that wasn't included in the official broadcast as they cut away to Russell when it happened. As well as being a guitar tech to Mr Urbanowicz during his tenure in Editors, and evidently held in some esteem by that man, he also occasionally acted as onstage muscle when camera operators got too close to their subjects. Here's a fine example of that which took place during the performance of, wait for it...When Anger Shows. You want irony? We got irony here at the Archive. Rest in peace, Chris.

Here's a second bit of bonus material to accompany the Editors @ Haldern Pop 2008.  King Leetch and Mr Smith in a cheery mood as they chat with a German interviewer.  My favourite moment is Tom's reply to the comment that the band don't make "singalong happy songs":-

"We're darker than Abba..."

How right you are, sir.
