Up next is an interview from MOG with Tom and Russell in 2007, and it's another example of the band outliving the website, which no longer exists having been taken offline in 2014. I have to say up front that the sound on this is absolutely appalling, almost as if the interviewer was totally without a microphone. As a result, you hear the answers perfectly but the inquiries that preceded them are muffled and buried. I've listened to this over again with the volume up pretty much on full blast and, at the risk of damaging my hearing forever, I reckon I've put together most of the important questions asked. They are probably not word perfect representations but the general ideas are conveyed:-
- How enmeshed do you let yourselves get in debates about music piracy, illegal downloading and file sharing?
- What's the most recurring topic of conversation when you guys are out on tour?
- Tell us 2 things that Editors do, that we wouldn't expect them of being able to do.
- There are a ton of bands out there doing post punk revival....how did you approach trying to separate yourselves from them with the new album?
- The way that AEHAS moves from the Wirey sound of The Back Room to a more bombastic expression, in which some songs have shades of Arena Rock, is that indicative of the band's future direction?
- Are you finding it difficult to channel the sound of the new record into the live experience?
- How much have you worked out before you go into the studio?
- (for Tom) Where do you get the most inspiration? Alone, or when you're out on the road?
- What was the one moment in your lives when you realised you needed to make music.....?
- (for Tom)What is your vision of the place we go to after death ?
- What do you fear the most?
- When you first started out, what did you think of the tag "Boy Division"?
- Do the Coldplay comparisons that have popped up in quite a few reviews of AEHAS annoy you in any way?
- In the album credits there's a reference to a game of "Hide and Seek" on the track Spiders.....
I believe that these are all questions suggested by the general public, and Mr Smith and King Leetch are in good spirits throughout, but there are definitely some moments where it seems a little bit strained. "Boy Division". Yikes!
As a piece of interesting trivia, they are sitting in the very warehouse where the video for AEHAS was filmed. It's still my favourite promotional video by the band because it demonstrated that not only do they have a ridiculously silly sense of humour, and that they really couldn't give a toss if you laughed along or not. Brilliant. And if you needed a reminder of the absolute genius that was that clip, here's a visual of those terribly bored looking models strutting around in their multi-coloured tights. Good times.
