Newcastle Academy 18th October 2007 (audio)

"This is new, but don't be afraid, it won't bite..."
Tom introduces Banging Heads

Originally taped and made available by Norm over at the band's official forum (thank you!), here's an excellent quality bootleg of Editors' show on the 18th October 2007 in Newcastle Upon Tyne.  Another milestone for me as an Editors fan, as this was the second time I'd seen them play in Newcastle. This was a homecoming gig of sorts because their label at the time, Kitchenware was based in the city-centre near the Haymarket bus station. Support on the night came from The Kissaway Trail and Ra Ra Riot, and I confess that I showed up just as Ra Ra Riot were about halfway through their set, so I can't really comment on how they were. I remember that the venue was rammed, lots of folks in there and the mix of people was amazing. Older couples, little kids and their parents, several hundred student-types, it was great to see.

After the support acts had finished the band came on to the synthesized voice that underpins An End Has a Start, launched into the track and then pretty much didn't let up until Fingers. It seemed to go past very quickly, as I recall, and my ears were ringing afterwards. I didn't get my hearing back fully for about 48 hours. If you listen to the crowd on this recording it becomes apparent that we were all up for it, and we all definitely made ourselves heard. In fact, when Tom did the extended intro to Munich we successfully managed to drown him out.  The band played their rare b-side Let Your Good Heart Lead You Home at this show, which was really great to hear.

We got an opportunity to play the "New Song Game" when another b-side, Banging Heads was played. At that time, the song was still extremely new and so most people hadn't heard it. However, if you looked around the room you could actually see one or two people singing along, people who seemed know all the words. It was during those moments where your eyes meet theirs that you realised that, just like you, there is a good chance they hang out way too much at the band's official forum and they're as overly obsessed with the band as you are. It's always nice to meet people with common psychiatric illnesses. I remember doing the same thing during gigs prior to AEHAS coming out, where you'd be singing along to Bones because you'd heard it on bootlegs prior to it even being recorded officially. There was always a handful of hardcore fans mouthing all the words with you when you looked around the room.

After we left the venue we were walking back through the streets surrounding it and every other car that passed was playing Editors on their stereo. One of the rare occasions that you hear someone playing music loud in their car and you actually feel the urge to tell them to turn it up. All in all it was another amazing night and for that, I'll always be grateful.

Anyway, enough of my reminiscing and rambling, use the link below to experience now what we all experienced on the 18th of October 2007:-
