The Warsaw, Brooklyn NY 28-3-2006 (audio)

In March of 2006 the band began the equivalent of a full month of touring activity in North American with Stellastarr*. This taping is from their New York show on the 28th of that month, and I'm afraid I don't have any details of who captured the event. The sound quality is amazing, and if this was you then thanks a lot for making your work available.

In 2006 Editors were still considered a "buzz band" in some quarters, having garnered a certain modicum of hype from their live shows and the limited recorded releases up until that point. The Back Room, which had already gone public in July of 2005 in the UK was finally landing in U.S. record stores just a week before this show. Therefore this tour was the equivalent of stepping onstage night after night in front of several groups of forewarned people who's overriding thought was probably "prove it".

Listening back concerts from the very beginning of Editors' story it's obvious just how much credit needs to go the way of Ed and Russell. The base that they provide for all the other melodies and noise from Chris and Tom is just so solid. As with all Editors shows, it's the little omissions and additions that make them special. There's some subtle vocal flourishes during Fall that really suit the mood of that song. Plus, Chris' guitar being so far up in the mix means that you really hear him crunching and bending those notes towards the end of the track. It's novel to hear that they hadn't even decided what they were going to do with Bones yet, as Tom says after Munich:-

"This is a song that may be on our second record, who knows? We'll see..."

As we know now, Bones went on to become the song that effectively announced the arrival of An End Has a Start. Tom delivers it with such an intensity here, and I definitely feel as though most of these early songs benefit from not having been ground down through repetition. That's why each new tour the band undertake is exciting, because you know they have to learn how to deliver the newer songs in front of an audience effectively, and so everything has an edge of increased concentration and of avoiding potential disaster. After a little while, and once they hit that sweet spot where they know the material and they can stop holding it so tightly when they play, that's when they become the force onstage that's able to convert a cynical crowd. Hopefully, it was mission accomplished on this occasion. Enjoy the music ;)
