The Ambassador Theatre Dublin 24th May 2006 (audio)

A concert that really doesn't need any hard-sell tactics from me at all, and I think a quick glance down the setlist will tell you why. Both Bones and The Weight of the World are given another airing, as are Find Yourself a Safe Place and You Are Fading. What's most interesting about this particular gig is the inclusion of the very seldom performed track Release, which was originally a b-side on the Munich CD single and can also be found on the Cuttings disc that accompanied a limited run of The Back Room album. It is also included on the recent You Are Fading collection released around the time of the Unedited box.

When Bones was first being shuffled around the setlist in its early form, I felt like I remember it being played a lot faster that later versions. I thought it may have been down to faulty recall on my part (absolutely possible), but I've looked into it and the evidence suggests I could be on to something. To give you a comparison, the official video for Bones from the AEHAS album runs at 4 minutes and 8 seconds. That take doesn't have the extra "Retreats" and all the instrumental fat has been trimmed right down. The version played at the Ambassador has all the additional stuff included and still manages to clock in at 4 minutes and 3 seconds, which intuitively makes no sense. They probably did just used to play it really, really fast back in ye olden black and white days. Ahhh, the urgency of youth.

Right at the end of the set there's another Editors' cover version, this time it's Road to Nowhere by Talking Heads. As I'm sure I've mentioned on the blog before, the subject of Editors' cover versions has been pretty divisive among fans. The purists would tell you that if Editors didn't write it, then they're not interested but then there are those of us who actually quite like some of the band's take on other people's songs.  I'm actually listening to Lullaby while I'm sorting out this blog, and the live version of Orange Crush performed with We Are Scientists as backing singers is wonderful.

But today, it's all about The Ambassador Theatre in Dublin as recorded and made available by Johnky. The files are in FLAC format, in accordance with the taper's wishes. Thanks very much to you for sharing your work. Enjoy the music ;)
