Maifeld Derby 16th June 2018

What a crowd. I believe that this is the first live stream of the VI OLENCE campaign, and if you wondered what the band had been up to in the gap between the American odyssey and now, they've clearly been working on the structure of some of their songs. Cold has some brand new intro music, An End Has a Start has some extra guitar work from Elliott, Hallelujah (So Low) starts differently and on and on we go. You'll also notice the stage backdrop is now the cover of VI OLENCE, which if anyone was in any doubt really shifts the focus to the centre of the current campaign. I know that it isn't everybody's idea of fun, but I like when bands mix things up like this; that they aren't so precious about presenting their songs that they won't look for new ways to improve them. Even if those tunes so well known that they may as well be placed under well-guarded, alarmed glass in the music museum. You're watching the same band, but they're still trying to become something else. Progress.

A fine example of that is Bricks and Mortar which returned to the setlist with a different ending. It no longer gently slows down to Mr Smith and a keyboard hoping that life is good for you, instead finding its finality in a much more definite form. The same goes for Papillon which now has a similar ending to Smokers, all pounding drums and electronics.

I have to tip my hat and say that Justin, Elliott, Tom, Ed and Russell really are so good at doing this now. They seem to have arrived at a point where they can confidently put on a show rather than simply playing a set of songs and it's a lot of fun to watch. I spend most of my time submerged in old footage and recordings of this group and the development and evolution has been striking.

"We've all been changed..."? Agreed, but in such a great way.

Point of trivia. Did you hear the vocal sample from ERM=BD during Ocean of Night? It's there, but it only happens fleetingly. Happy hunting...

And if you still find yourself wanting that little something extra from your live Editors experience, there's more classic Tom Swears moments during PapillonBlood and Sugar. Spicy! Enjoy the music ;) x
